Your Hughesnet Satellite Systems is available ANYWHERE in the United States. Highspeed Internet Access is now available to anyone - no matter where you live!
HughesNet Speeds
HughesNet's Internet access speeds are considerably faster than standard dial-up speeds. With these increased speeds, subscribers have the ability to download large files, enjoy an enhanced online experience, and be more productive. The table below compares the estimated time of typical Internet downloads using the HughesNet Home and HughesNet Professional service plans versus a 56K dial-up connection (speed based on typical response times).
| Internet Usage | Estimate Time | ||
| HOME | PROFESSIONAL | DIAL-UP (56K) | |
| Open a Web Page (100 K) | 5 sec | 1 sec | 14 sec |
| Download a Video Clip (1 MB) | 10 sec | 8 sec | 5 min |
| Download a Song (4 MB) | 41 sec | 32 sec | Almost 10 min! |
| Download Software (25 MB) | 4.5 min | 3.5 min | Almost 1 hr! |
As you can see, the HughesNet Internet connection speeds with the HN7000S modem are much faster than dial-up and will make HughesNet subcribers' online experience exceptionally rewarding. The table below highlights the HughesNet maximum download and upload speeds for each service plan.
| Service Plan | HN7000S Speed | |
| Max. Download Speed | Max. Upload Speed | |
| Home | 700 Kbps | 128 Kbps |
| Professional | 1000 Kbps | 200 Kbps |
| ProPlus | 1500 Kbps | 200 Kbps |
| Small Office | 1500 Kbps | 300 Kbps |
| Business Internet | 2000 Kbps | 500 Kbps |

Although the new HN7000S modem increases upload and download speeds for all residential and business service plans, high-speed Internet by satellite service is STILL NOT recommended for some sub-second time-sensitive types of Internet uses. The sub-second delay (latency) of satellite Internet access affects connection speeds. While this sub-second delay is mostly unnoticeable in general web browsing, it may have a significant impact on time-sensitive applications. Therefore, we do not recommend the following applications for use over HughesNet:
- Real-time online gaming, particularly "twitch" games such as Quake, Diablo etc.
- Real-time collaboration and conferencing, such as NetMeeting or videoconferencing
- VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) Internet phone service
- Online day trading
In addition, connecting to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) with the HughesNet service is not recommended, despite the faster speeds available with the HN7000S modem. If you choose to run VPN over satellite, your data speeds may be reduced as much as 50% to 75% while the VPN session is active. Once the VPN session is terminated, the subscriber's typical connection speed resumes. HughesNet Technical Support does not provide configuring or troubleshooting support for subscriber's issues associated with VPN connections.
Latency refers to the amount of time it takes a packet of data to travel across a network. With satellite service, that data must travel up to the satellite and back (about 45,000 miles). This round trip adds about a half a second delay to the total time your computer takes to communicate with a Website or host server.
